Natural Beauty | Moisturizing Body Oil for Summer
I use variations of this deliciously rich body oil throughout the year, and find that it always moisturizes more deeply than any of the creams I have tried. For summer, my favourite base is avocado oil and I certainly have gone with the most simple method of moisturizing by slathering myself in that rich and silky oil when I find myself without a blend!
This blend for the body is comprised of oils and essential oils chosen for their helpful properties, to give skin exactly what it craves. Both grapeseed oil and camellia oil are deeply nourishing and easily absorbed. Tamanu oil has wound-healing properties and I find it helps to quicken the healing of those pesky mosquito bites. Aloe vera oil, too, soothes skin irritations and wounds, and is also anti-inflammatory while being deeply moisturizing. Rosehip seed oil hydrates itchy and dry skin (both issues I suffer from when I forget to moisturize!), it also is helpful for improving the tone and texture of the skin, and it is full of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. The deeply emollient sweet almond oil and meadowfoam seed oil are included as they moisturize, smooth, and help prevent moisture loss from the skin. The essential oil of sweet orange supports collagen-formation and stimulates the lymphatic system. Rosemary moisturizes and also treats cellulite. Neroli improves skin elasticity, and minimizes thread veins and scars, while rejuvenating and revitalizing skin. Black pepper is helpful for muscle aches and circulation. Grapefruit is also known to sooth muscle fatigue. I love this blend after intense hot yoga sessions.
When I make this, I often divide the total amount into two or three smaller bottles, but you could use a larger bottle if that suits you. I keep one in the bathroom by the shower to use immediately after I come out. Another into my yoga bag, as my skin becomes quite dry easily and I like to quickly moisturize following my shower after classes. This rich oil would make a lovely addition to a bath; just pour a generous amount as you draw your bath, then immerse yourself! And while this blend was made with skin in mind, it is also a perfect oil treatment for the hair if you, too, get dry ends that need some special attention to look their best. To do so, on dry hair massage oil into your ends and halfway up the hair shaft. Allow the oil to penetrate for at least a half hour, and then shampoo and condition as usual.
Just a note about sourcing ingredients: try to opt for cold-pressed oils, and choose organic when you are able. There are many great sources for these and other oils online (try Mountain Rose Herbs or Amazon, for instance). You can also find a number of these oils, as I have, at health food and grocery stores. Avocado oil doubles as my favourite oil for the kitchen when cooking over higher heat. If you're having trouble sourcing any of the ingredients below, simply omit. You'll still have a gorgeous blend!
Moisturizing Body Oil for Summer
makes 1/2 cup of body oil
1/4 c avocado oil
1 tbsp grapeseed oil
1 tbsp sweet almond oil
1 tbsp camellia oil
1 tbsp meadowfoam seed oil
1 tsp aloe vera oil
1 tsp tamanu oil
10 drops neroli essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
10 drops grapefruit essential oil
5 drops sweet orange essential oil
5 drops black pepper essential oil
Whisk or swirl oils together to combine. I find that using a glass measuring cup is best, as it is easy to then pour the blend into containers. Transfer oil into a sealable bottle, using a funnel if you have one. Use as suggested above; be luxuriously moisturized!
